The next review will be Roundabout of Death by Faysal Khartash.
“[Faysal Khartash] has always written imaginatively about the character of Aleppo, especially those relegated to the margins, the deep trenches, revealing the city’s subterranean worlds. He intimately chronicles Aleppo’s alleyways and secret corners, which is why most of his novels have faced state censorship.”

The Pianist of Yarmouk by Aeham Ahmad: Book Review
There are photographs captured during the Syrian conflict that will remain imprinted in our memories forever. One of those photographs is of Aeham Ahmad ‘sitting at a piano, singing a song amid the rubble of my [Aeham’s] neighbourhood.’ It was one of those images that moved hearts and minds across the world.
‘I realised that I’d be willing to give up almost anything, but not music. My music kept me alive.’ (p.184).
Art & Culture
‘Books, he [Omar Abu Anas] had insisted, whether on the subject of literature, history, politics, religion, poetry or anything else, can help show the way forward and provide the building blocks for the years to come.’ (p. 292).
About the Founder
Georgia Bridgett is a University of Liverpool BA (Hons) English graduate. In 2020 Georgia completed an MA in Social History of Art at the University of Leeds. Her dissertation explored Ariella Azoulay’s theory of ‘watching’ photographs to further understand how citizens engage with photographs of Syrian refugees in the media.
Throughout and alongside her Master’s degree, Georgia has developed a deep interest in Middle Eastern history, culture and politics. She is also interested in relations between the Middle East and the West, and is passionate about challenging common stereotypes and misconceptions about the MENA region. This led her to intern for two months with Pink Jinn and create MENAb00ks. Georgia has also written for charities. MENAb00ks is where Georgia explores her passion for literature about the MENA region. Her personal blog on https://georgiabridgett.com/ is where you will find book reviews with a focus on humanitarian literature as well as women’s writing from around the world.
